He became part of president Boris Yeltsin's administration in 1996 and rose through the ranks very quickly to become acting president December 31st, 1999.

The constitutional term limits kept him from having a consecutive third term, but he served as prime minister to Dmitri Medvedev starting in 2008 and was then reelected as president in 2009.
